Dramatic Reading “Marco Caridad’s Room” with Mel Gorham at Art And Design Gallery

For one night only, Art | Design Gallery presented the dramatized reading of the play “Marco Caridad’s Room” on April 27th, where Marco Caridad, the artist, was starring along with Mel Gorham, the Hollywood actress who starred in Wayne Wang’s film Smoke and Blue in the Face. The play was written by the Venezuelan playwright Yonyi Gutiérrez and is inspired by the abstract paintings of artist Marco Caridad that were part of the exhibition “Sense, feeling it or not.” The performance was inside the main room of the artist’s solo exhibition, and the actors acted on top of a 12 foot long by 6-foot wide table. A very intimate audience was around them.

Using the psychology of color, Gutiérrez confronts the characters with the emotional charge of the artist, achieving the conjunction of biographical aspects of Caridad throughout the development of the plot. At the same time, the artist exposes his memories and experiences, and makes the characters “two strangers,” to emerge the most sincere of emotions, exposing a relationship tied to the loss.” They already did at MOMA with ROTHKO in the play Red. It was an honor to perform this concept in Miami with my art pieces around me.” said artist Marco Caridad.

The work “Marco Caridad’s Room,” according to its playwriter, “is a contemporary piece that expresses the feelings of the protagonists through the artist’s paintings. Through dialogue between the characters, important aspects of Marco Caridad’s life are narrated originally: his muses and what motivates him to capture the abstracts in the canvas.”

The music was played by DJ JayR. “I love that this reading will be like those I’m used to doing in New York… It will be beautiful with the music in the background,” added Mel Gorham before the performance. “Marco Caridad’s Room” premiered, in its original version, in 2015 in Venezuela. Also, it was performed in Kendall at Artefactus Project for two weekends in 2016. “Each time we presented the piece, the audience was moved, even several attendees came out with tears in their eyes,” mentioned Caridad.
