Sans Stereotypes

Presented at Miami International Fine Arts in 2021, Sans Stereotypes brought together cut canvases, prints, and sculptural objects to examine inherited ideas of gender and identity. In The Quality of Being Soft, the canvas moves away from the flat wall into a pliable, suspended form.

Softness is both a material condition and a challenge to the expectation that masculinity must appear hard, controlled, or invulnerable. The series makes that tension visible through cut edges, folds, color, and the effort required to hold a form in place.
