Reflejos de lo imposible
Bound books, a lit candle, and a mirror put inherited certainties under pressure.
Watch video on YouTubeAbout the project
Marco Caridad activates an assemblage of altered and bound books through bodily action and candlelight. The bindings hold the books together and keep them closed. The same gesture that gives the assemblage its form also restricts access to what the books contain. The book takes on the vulnerability of a body held in place, carrying both the knowledge we inherit and the limits imposed on it.
The mirror makes looking at oneself an act of confrontation. As the candlelight shifts, parts of the face and the assemblage emerge and disappear. The performance holds knowledge, faith, and desire in the same space and asks how what we have learned to believe shapes what we can see and what we allow ourselves to imagine.
